I had the opportunity to hunt elk with a rifle during the track. My father and I landed a nice 5X6 bull elk killed. With advancing age, he landed between his teeth, a bull of 10 years. We took in its first year last year. We were hunting the same area for morethan 10 years. So it was great to harvest a bull that would’ve been a spike when we first started hunting this particular area. Who knows how many times we spotted him over the years.

Bow hunters will debate that it’s not fair for rifle hunters to hunt during the rut. While rifle hunters will debate that it’s not fair to let bow hunters hunt during the rut and for a whole month (at least in Utah). Writing about this subject and having watched a lot of sportsmen debate about it over the years has given me perspective from both sides.

Bow hunting in many aspects is harder than rifle hunting. You have to get much closer to the elk, sometimes within a stones throw away. You have to be practicing with a bow all year long (or you should be) so that you know your weapon inside and out. And so that you know what distances you can or can’t shoot. However during the bow hunt you tend to see a lot more game than a rifle hunter. And a lot less hunters depending on the state that you live in.

Rifle hunters do have one disadvantage when it comes to hunting during the rut. Usually there are a lot more hunters in the field than the bow hunt and this tends to spook the elk, or you end up sharing the same honey hole with another hunter. Other than that rifle hunting during the rut is one of the best times to be out hunting.

So who should be allowed to hunt elk during the rut? I say both of them. Here in Utah, bow hunters get at least a week and sometimes two weeks to hunt elk during the rut. Of course depending on the weather. Sometimes when it’s too hot the rut doesn’t start until later. Almost when the bow hunt is finished. Rifle hunters get about a week to hunt elk and it’s usually prime time to hunt them.

Bow hunters argue that they don’t get enough time to hunt during the rut. I can see that and agree in some ways. So what’s the solution? I don’t know if there will ever be a solution. Rifle hunters of course want to hunt during the rut and so do bow hunters. It would be nice if an agreement could be made that would please both sides. I’ve also heard bow hunters say that the time they get to hunt elk in Utah which is one month is plenty of time to harvest an elk. So it’s hard to figure out who to please, or who the minority truly is.

I will say this though that rifle hunting elk during their rut is one of the funnest hunts I’ve ever been on in my life.

Whether you bow hunt or rifle hunt we are all part of a brotherhood, all on the same side and all hunters.
