It is the 30-30 Winchester has been around for more than a century and is still the most popular deer cartridge in the U.S. Why is it after all these years the best sellers, especially with modern cartridges available to hunters flat shooting today?
Here are some reasons for the popularity of the little "Thutty Thutty" are.
First, the guns, which are not for the 30-30 rooms expensive compared to other guns for the other rooms round. It 'is not uncommon for a Winchester Model 94 or Marlin 336 in good shape in a pawn shop for you under $ 200. These weapons are capable of acceptable accuracy for hunting deer at 100 yards or more with a little 'practice.
30-30 ammo is usually a couple of bucks (no pun intended) cheaper than other ammunition as well.
The light recoil of the guns for the Winchester 30-30 new rooms make it desirable to hunters, women and those who simply do not shoot a gun a couple of times a yearNot to mention the hunters, who are sensitive to recoil.
Finally, the ride is still a solid ride. I think it's fair to say that the 30-30 Winchester has probably everything that has made America walks.
The 150 and 170 grain bullets carry enough punch to make a deer at distances up to 200 meters. Personally, if I had known it would be the possibility of a shot, I would be the 170 grain bullet or the new Hornady Lever Evolution.
Speaking of the new Hornady Lever Evolution,I've never used these shifts. But from what I understand by hunters in the fields and on message boards, these shots are all to be announced. Shot flat and hard to beat.
For those of you who have not heard of the evolution of leverage, have developed a polymer spire bullet nose to be used in tubular magazines. The tip is soft and breaks. Hornady pistol and a few writers have noted exceptional accuracy up to 250 meters with the newGiri.
I would never classify as Thutty Thutty Elk or Grizzly Bear, but fell to 30-30. I have some stories of black bear tours in Canada, rather than saying to a 30-30 rifle, because to stop the handling characteristics of fast and short-range energy of the projectile 170 grains.
Hunters with the Winchester 30-30 have several choices when it comes to ammunition.
Remington offers the 125 grain Accelerator and most ammo manufacturers offer both the 150and 170 grain factory loads. I’ve always preferred the 170 grain offerings over the 150 grainers. Don’t ask me why, I just prefer the heavier bullet. The LeveRevolution comes in a 160 grain spire tip.
For several years, I used the Remington 170 grain hollow points. These were deadly Deer takers! I stopped using them when I shot a large 8 point at about 80 yards. I later found the fragmented bullet on the far front leg, a few inches above the elbow, where it had broken the bone. I wasn’t crazy to search for pieces of my ball, even if he took the dollar has gone and broke his leg on the other side. I'm back to 170 bullets nose wheat.
Many so-called Professional Gun Writers over the years, the small place Thutty Thutty to say things like there was just 75 meters after that is not accurate enough for deer hunting, etc. It was obvious that they have never scored a 30 -30 and it was just a loan to write an article.
I have a theoryof why blunt tipped bullets in rounds like the 30-30 Winchester kill deer better than what many Gun Writers would like.
I believe that a blunt tipped bullet, be it a round nose or flat nose, delivers more of its kinetic energy upon impact than spire tipped bullets. Even the poly tipped bullets have to penetrate a certain depth before the start expanding and delivering their load of kinetic energy. Truth be known, many of spire pointed bullets use up the majority of their kinetic energy in the dirt on the other side of the animal.
Blunt tipped bullets are also known to penetrate deep. Couple this with the shock due to the sudden impact of a blunt tipped bullet and you have a recipe for a quick kill on a game animal.
Whether you contemplating buying a rifle for a first time hunter, or buying a rifle for yourself, don’t count out the Winchester 30-30 and the Rifles it is chambered for. They’re perfect for the first time hunter or the Old Fart who just wants a lighter hunting rifle. Put a quality scope on the top of the rifle and you’ll have a life long rifle that will bring home the Venison if the shooter does their job!
